ABDOMINOPLASTY

Mateusz Koziej MD, PhD, DSc - plastic surgeon

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and correcting abdominal muscle spacing. Indications for this procedure include:

•   Excess skin and fat around the abdomen that persists despite diet and exercise.
•   Stretch marks and loose skin on the stomach as a result of pregnancy, significant weight loss or skin aging.
•   Poor abdominal muscle tone that causes a protruding belly and loss of waist definition.
•   The desire to get a flatter, firmer and aesthetic belly.

A tummy tuck is performed by a plastic surgeon and usually requires general anesthesia. The procedure begins by making an incision along the lower abdomen, hidden in the underwear area. Then, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed, abdominal muscles are tightened and strengthened. If necessary, an incision may also be made around the navel to adjust its position to the new proportions of the abdomen. After the procedure, the wound is sutured and the treated area is secured with special dressings. Abdominoplasty is often combined with liposuction.

Following a tummy tuck, it is important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions to ensure an optimal recovery process. The following are general recommendations:

•   Wearing compression garments to support and shape the abdominal tissues for a certain amount of time after surgery.
•   Avoiding physical activity and effort for several weeks after surgery to allow tissues to heal properly.
•   Using prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs as directed by the surgeon.
•   Protection against direct sun exposure and use of sunscreen creams on the abdomen area.
•   Adherence to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle to maintain the results achieved after the procedure.

After recovery from a tummy tuck, patients usually experience an improvement in the appearance of their abdomen and increased self-confidence. The expected effects are:

•   Smoothing and removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen.
•   Increase in the tension of the abdominal muscles, restoring the definition of the waist.
•   Improve the contours and proportions of the abdomen, giving a flatter, firmer and aesthetic appearance.

Please note that the results of the procedure may vary depending on the individual anatomical features of the patient. Before deciding on a tummy tuck, it is always recommended to consult a plastic surgeon who will thoroughly assess the individual case and present the expected results and potential risks associated with the procedure.
