Breast augmentation

Mateusz Koziej MD, PhD, DSc - plastic surgeon

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargment, is a surgical procedure that aims to increase the volume and shape of the breasts. Indications for this procedure include:

•   The desire to increase breast size in order to improve body proportions.
•   Breast volume change after weight loss, pregnancy or aging.
•   Breast asymmetry, where one breast is smaller or differently shaped than the other.
•   Breast reconstruction after mastectomy or other breast removal procedures.

Breast augmentation is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. The procedure usually requires general anesthesia. There are different breast augmentation techniques, with the most common being:

1.   Breast implants: the surgeon makes an incision in the area under the breast or around the nipple, and then places the breast implants under the pectoral muscle or glandular tissue.
2.   Fat transfer: fat is taken from another area of the body using the liposuction technique and then transplanted into the breasts to increase their volume.

Following breast augmentation, it is important to follow your plastic surgeon's recommendations to ensure an optimal recovery process. The following are general recommendations:

•   Using prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs as directed by the surgeon.
•   Wearing a special shaping bra after surgery to support breast shaping.
•   Avoiding physical activity and lifting weights for 6 weeks after the procedure.
•   Securing the incision site with appropriate dressings
•   Follow wound hygiene recommendations

After recovery from breast augmentation, patients typically experience an increase in breast volume and an improvement in body proportions. The expected effects are:

•   Breast size increase and improvement of fullness and volume.
•   Improvement of breast symmetry in case of asymmetry.
•   Obtaining the appearance of the breasts, taking into account the individual preferences of the patient.

Please note that the results of the procedure may vary depending on the individual anatomical features of the patient and the type and size of breast implants. Before deciding on breast augmentation, it is always recommended to consult a plastic surgeon who will carefully assess the individual case, present the expected results and the potential risks associated with the procedure.
