Breast lift (mastopexia)

Mateusz Koziej MD, PhD, DSc - plastic surgeon

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the shape and lift sagging breasts. Indications for this procedure include:

•   Breast sagging, which can be caused by aging, weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding or other factors.
•   Asymmetry of the breasts asymmetrical, and one breast is raised and the other is not.
•   Stretching of the skin around the breast, which has lost its elasticity and elasticity.
•   The desire for a more youthful and lifted appearance of the breasts.

A breast lift is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. The procedure usually requires general anesthesia. There are several breast lift techniques, depending on the individual characteristics of the patient and the degree of breast sagging. The most commonly used techniques include:

•   Peri-areolar incision: the surgeon makes an incision around the nipple-areola complex to remove excess skin and glandular tissue, then lift the breast (nipple scar)
•   Peri-areolar incision with vertical incision: in addition to the peri-areolar incision, the surgeon makes an incision along the line from the nipple to the inframammary crease to achieve greater shape improvement and breast lift (lollipop-shaped scar).
•   Peri-areolar incision with vertical and horizontal incision: in addition to the peri-areolar incision and vertical incision, the surgeon makes a horizontal incision in the inframammary crease to further improve the shape of the breast (anchor-shaped scar)

After a breast lift, it's important to follow your plastic surgeon's recommendations to ensure an optimal recovery process. The following are general recommendations:

•   Using prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs as directed by the surgeon.
•   Wearing a special shaping bra after surgery to support breast shaping.
•   Avoiding physical activity and lifting weights for 6 weeks after the procedure.
•   Securing the incision site with appropriate dressings
•   Following recommendations regarding wound hygiene

After recovery from a breast lift, patients typically experience an improvement in the shape and lift of their breasts. The expected effects are:

•   Lifting of sagging breasts, restoring their more youthful appearance.
•   Improvement of breast symmetry in case of asymmetry.
•   Recreating the proportions and contours of the breast.

It should be remembered that the results of the procedure may vary depending on the individual anatomical features of the patient and the degree of breast sagging. Before deciding on a breast lift, it is always recommended to consult a plastic surgeon who will carefully assess the individual case, present the expected results and the potential risks associated with the procedure.
