BREAST REDUCTION

Mateusz Koziej MD, PhD, DSc - plastic surgeon

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and volume of the breast. Indications for this procedure include:

•   Big, heavy breasts that cause physical discomfort, such as back, neck, or shoulder pain.
•   Breasts too large in relation to the proportions of the body, which affects self-esteem and makes it difficult to find the right clothes.
•   Breast asymmetry, where one breast is much larger than the other.
•   Health problems related to large breasts, such as sore skin under the breasts or difficulties in maintaining hygiene.

Breast reduction is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. The procedure usually requires general anesthesia. The course of the procedure may vary depending on the individual needs of the patient. During breast reduction, the surgeon removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin, and then remodels the breasts to achieve a smaller, more proportionate size and shape. The incisions are made around the nipple, along a vertical line from the nipple to the fold under the breast and a horizontal line in the fold under the breast.

After a breast reduction, it is important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions to ensure an optimal recovery process. The following are general recommendations:

•   Using prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs as directed by the surgeon.
•   Wearing a special shaping bra after surgery to support breast shaping.
•   Avoiding physical activity and lifting weights for 6 weeks after the procedure.
•   Securing the incision site with appropriate dressings
•   Follow wound hygiene recommendations

After recovery from breast reduction, patients typically experience a reduction in breast size and volume. The expected effects are:

•   Reducing physical discomfort associated with large breasts, such as back, neck or shoulder pain.
•   Improvement of body proportions and silhouette harmony.
•   Increasing comfort in everyday activities.

Please note that the results of the procedure may vary depending on the individual anatomical features of the patient. Before making a decision about breast reduction, it is always recommended to consult a plastic surgeon who will carefully assess the individual case, present the expected results and the potential risks associated with the procedure.
