Upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Mateusz Koziej MD, PhD, DSc - plastic surgeon

Upper eyelid plastic surgery is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids and reduce the functional problems associated with them.

Indications for this procedure include:

-Excessive loose skin on the eyelids, causing a tired look or limiting the field of vision.
-Drooping eyelids that make it difficult to see.
-Fatty hernias that add weight to the eyelids and change their shape.
-Lack of elasticity and tension in the skin of the eyelids, which leads to loss of definition of the eyelid lines.

Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. The treatment begins with marking the cutting lines, which are carefully planned so as to minimize the visibility of the scar. Then, precise incisions are made in the designated areas, removing excess skin, fat and/or muscle. If necessary, tissues can also be remodeled to achieve the desired shape of the eyelids. After the procedure is completed, the procedure ends with the placement of sutures, which are removed after about 6-7 days.

After the upper eyelid surgery, it is important to follow the exact recommendations of the plastic surgeon in order to ensure the optimal recovery process:

-Applying cold compresses to the eyelids to reduce swelling and redness for a few days after the procedure.
-Avoiding physical activity for about 4 weeks after the procedure.
-Use of the prescribed analgesic therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs, if recommended by the surgeon.
-Protection against direct sunlight and the use of sunscreen creams with high SPF on treated areas.
-Avoiding contact lenses and eye makeup for a few days after surgery.

After recovery from upper eyelid surgery, patients typically experience an improvement in both eyelid aesthetics and function. The expected effects are:

-Refreshes the appearance of the upper eyelids, eliminating tired or sad facial expressions.
-Clearly emphasize the eyelid lines, giving the face a more youthful appearance.
-Increasing the field of vision by removing drooping eyelids.
-Removal of fat bags under the eyes that contribute to reducing the heaviness of the eyelids.
-Rebuilding the elasticity and tension of the skin of the eyelids, restoring the natural definition and proportions.

Please note that the results of the procedure may vary depending on the individual anatomical features of the patient. Before deciding on upper eyelid surgery, it is always recommended to consult a plastic surgeon who will carefully assess the individual case and present the expected results and potential risks associated with the procedure.
